Recombinant Bovine Somatotropin (rbST)

Typically abbreviated as rbST or bST, recombinant bovine somatotropin was approved for injection in dairy cattle to increased milk production in 1994. It can be define as genetically engineered hormone that stimulates milk production in cattle.

The process to produce begins when the gene for bovine somatotropin ( a natural bovine hormone ) is inserted into special bacterium and the result is harvested and processed into recombinant bST that is ready to used.

#estimates that use of bST increases milk production averages per cow about 1800 lbs.
